Take a Work/Life Balance Survey and Receive a Complimentary Tele-Seminar Recording
In partnership with the Elsevier Foundation, AWIS is in the process of designing a work/life balance program for our members.
While this program will be available to all members, we anticipate that it will be most beneficial for women who are mid-career. The goal of the survey, designed to be completed in 15-20 minutes, is to gather data that will help us create a work/life program relevant to AWIS members’ needs. Your responses will also help us advocate on your behalf for improved workplace policies and practices.
Each person who completes the survey will receive a coupon for a complimentary tele-seminar recording, The Power of the Pause: Managing Conflict with Confidence.
PLUS, we will draw two winners from completed surveys for the following prizes:
· A full-set of the AWIS Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 Work/Life Balance Tele-Seminar Recordings
· A Complimentary Introductory Coaching Session
Individual responses to the survey questions are completely confidential.

You know AWIS as a networking and mentoring resource – now try us as you move to the next stage of your career. If you could use a professional or personal boost, try our new Coaching Program. As a woman in the field of science, technology, engineering or math we know that you face career and work-life balance challenges every single day. If you want to better position yourself for a raise or promotion, a coach can help you develop more confidence, create strategies to improve your visibility and promote-ability and give you a safe place to practice critical conversations. If you are experiencing a difficult situation at work, a professional coach can be an objective sounding board, helping you clarify the outcome you’d like to see and identify strategies to deal with the situation effectively.
Our one-of-a-kind program, with individual and group coaching components offered by experienced coaches, is specially designed for women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

What is coaching?
What if you had someone in your corner who could help you face those challenges head-on?
Someone who would listen to you without judgment and help you find just the right resources?
Someone to help you brainstorm strategies, practice new skills or plan for the next phase of your career in a confidential and safe place?
Someone whose primary focus is your personal and professional success?
Someone to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that you already have?
That's what coaching is. Whether you want to advance in your career, find a new job, improve your effectiveness and productivity, enhance your leadership skills or increase your satisfaction with your life and work, coaching can help.
Isn't coaching like mentoring?
While there are some similarities, coaching and mentoring are not the same. Check out Monica Horvath's column, Coaching vs. Mentoring, in Spring 2007 issue of AWIS magazine.
Why work with a professional coach?

If you are interested in making a career transition, a professional coach can help you evaluate your career choices through the lens of your strengths, values and long-term personal and professional goals.
If you want to better work-life balance, a professional coach can help you look at the way your current choices impact your work-life balance and identify the changes that will have the biggest impact on your personal satisfaction.
A professional coach can help you objectively assess your leadership, communication or conflict skills and provide you with tools you can use immediately to increase your emotional intelligence and become more effective both personally and professionally.

What Your AWIS Colleagues Are Saying About the Coaching Program
“My only regret was not having worked with a coach earlier in my career. I realize coaching could have shortened learning curves during my early career transitions. I would recommend coaching to any professional who finds herself asking, "what now?" or “how can I improve myself?” Evelyn Jabri, Ph.D.
“Doing coaching, you learn a lot about yourself. And having someone cheer you on in the difficult process of job searching is incredibly valuable. Low points can be overcome more easily because in talking to your coach you will discover ever more strategies and contacts to use for your search. The biweekly assignments helped me to keep moving along even when the rest of my life got busy. Also, the positive feedback and recognition of achievements, even when they were minor, helped to keep me motivated. I also realized that my network was a lot more extensive than I had thought and I got quite a few new contacts through my coach. These new contacts helped shape and narrow my job search through informational interviews.” Biomedical Science Professional & AWIS Member
“I think it was a very valuable experience. It was great to have someone to listen to my concerns and to guide me towards figuring out what works best for me. She also recommended some very useful books and websites. It was good to have someone to motivate me to work on these issues and to figure out a set of rules for working efficiently or to determine what criteria I could use in thinking where I would like to live for retirement later in life. By asking pertinent questions, Marci helped to guide me in the right direction to answer some of my own questions. It was very easy to set up. I had to change the time of the coaching sessions a couple of times, but it was very easy to find an alternative coaching time and Marci responded in a very timely manner.” AWIS Member
Coaching Profile
When Evelyn Jabri, Ph.D. left the academic world for a position with the corporate sector, she quickly realized she had to alter her communication style to interact effectively in a business setting. The change was a slow process, riddled with trial and error, until her first AWIS coaching session. Read more...
